![]() The Way of the Sword In Japanese, the word Kendo is comprised of two characters (kanji): "ken", meaning sword and "do" meaning way or path. The composite definition translates to "Way of the Sword", but really indicates the direction in life one develops by the inclusion of and adherence to kendo training principles. Kendo was developed in the 19th-century as a sport to permit skills in Japanese swordsmanship to be continued without bloodshed or injury. A bamboo sword called a shinai is used in place of the traditional two-handed sword (katana or to) of the samurai. Practitioners outfitted with protective padding for the head, chest, hand/wrist, and groin/hips areas practice movement, strikes and defenses with a partner. A thorough investigation of the tenets and techniques of kendo is beyond the scope of this website...best to just say..."Come and give it a try!" However, below are some links for recommended informative kendo sites on the Internet. |
