The Annapolis Kendo and Iaido Club was founded by Richard Lab Sensei (4-dan) in early 1996 as an independent organization under the guise of the Martial Arts Division of the Anne Arundel Community College Continuing Adult Education and Workforce Development Program. Club Founder
Sensei Richard LabSensei Lab has studied jujitsu, kendo and iaido since 1973. He was US Northern Regional Jujitsu Champion for six years and a senior technical advisor to the Northern Region of American Jujitsu Association. He studied with top kendo and iaido instructors in the US and Japan including three years in Okinawa with Dr. Gordon Warner. He’s given many kendo and iaido seminars and demonstrations for Japanese cultural organizations as well as the Japanese Embassy.

Lab Sensei holds a high rank in a number of martial arts:

  • 5-dan in judo (US Judo Association);
  • 5-dan, master instructor in jujitsu (American Jujitsu Association and All Japan Seibukan Martial Arts Association);
  • 4-dan in kendo (US Kendo Federation);
  • 4-dan in iaido (US Kendo Federation); and senior

Sensei Lab has been practicing judo since 1958. He attended various Olympic training camps and practiced in Japan and Thailand. He is senior technical advisor to the American Jujitsu Association.

Larry ScanlonLarry Scanlon is the head instructor for both the kendo and iaido branches of the AKIC with over 5 years experience in both disciplines.
